PURCELL Fly, bold rebellion, Z 324; selected music from King Arthur, Z 628
M LAMBERT Airs à une, II, III et IV parties avec la basse-continue
CHARPENTIER Le reniement de St Pierre
In the last decades of the 17th century, Purcell and Charpentier both wrote supremely dramatic music for small groups of singers. Whether they told stories of the delights of love or brought biblical dramas to life, they developed a sophisticated musical language, influenced by their work in the theatres of Paris and London, to express the full range of human emotions.
This concert includes Purcell’s ‘Fly bold rebellion’, an early ode welcoming King Charles II back to his court at Whitehall, and Charpentier’s The Denial of St Peter, one of the most poignant and expressive scenas of the period.
The Edinburgh performance is presented by The Georgian Concert Society.
